Custom Precision Machining for Chemical Equipment

August 16, 2024·By Nolan Watson

This custom precision machining and welding case study shows how HFW helped a chemical processing customer reduce replacement cost and assembly time on expensive alloy housings. During an on-site visit, our team noticed worn housings set aside for scrap, which presented an opportunity for rebuilding rather than replacing.

The Problem: Worn Alloy Housings

The housings in question were made from an expensive alloy and had been written off as unsalvageable.

We offered to bring the housings to our facility for analysis. After review, our engineers developed a repair strategy using precision machining and welding techniques.

The work needed to remove the damaged portion of the housing, install a custom insert, and re-machine the housing to exact specifications.

Custom Precision Machining and Welding Strategy

HFW developed a three-part custom precision machining and welding approach to restore the housings:

  1. Use precision machining to cut out the damaged portion of the housing.
  2. Fabricate and weld a custom insert in place.
  3. Re-machine the housing to exact specifications. When a repair requires final finishing, HFW can also coordinate the work with precision grinding.

The repair cost only one-third of the price of a new part, immediately saving the customer substantial capital.

Custom Machined Housings With Replaceable Wear Areas

The partnership did not stop with repair.

Working closely with the customer, we developed a new housing design with replaceable wear areas. Instead of scrapping the entire housing after wear, operators could unbolt the worn insert and replace it quickly.

The new design reduced the time required to bolt and insert each housing from eight hours to two. The results were significant: cutting assembly time by 75% at one-third the replacement cost.

Why Custom Precision Machining Matters in Chemical Equipment Repair

This case demonstrates how HFW's machining and welding expertise can create long-term value for chemical processing companies operating under tight budgets and demanding timelines.

In this case, precision machining removed the damaged portion of the housing and restored the final geometry after the insert was welded in place. Keeping custom machining and welding inside the same facility helped HFW move from analysis to finished housing with one point of accountability.

Why Chemical Processing Customers Choose HFW

  • Custom precision machining and welding experience: HFW has decades of experience repairing high-value components.
  • Customized solutions: Our team can engineer new designs that extend component life and streamline maintenance.
  • On-site collaboration: Our team can identify repair opportunities directly at customer facilities.
  • Material expertise in exotic alloys: chemical processing equipment is frequently built from high-nickel alloys, duplex stainless, Hastelloy®, and other corrosion-resistant materials that require specialized machining and welding procedures. HFW has experience with these materials in production settings.
  • One-source execution: precision machining, welding, coatings, assembly, and precision grinding services are available in one HFW facility.
