CNC Grinding Services for Thermal Spray Coatings
HFW Industries provides CNC precision grinding services with faster cycle times and tight tolerances on coated and uncoated parts.
Programming a CNC cylindrical grinder still depends on the same judgment a manual grinder calls on: material hardness, coating thickness, heat buildup, and wheel wear. The CNC grinder applies that judgment through software instead of a hand wheel.
- CNC cylindrical grinding for repeatable finishing and faster turnaround
- 12-inch swing, 80-inch centers, and 660-lb capacity
- Coated and uncoated shafts, rolls, journals, bearing areas, and seal surfaces
- Standalone grinding or grinding as a complement to thermal spraying, hardfacing, and machining
CNC precision grinding is part of HFW's larger grinding department in Buffalo, New York, which has been doing precision grinding work since 1950.
A large share of what comes through HFW's CNC grinder has already been through a coating booth. Tungsten carbide and chrome carbide applied by HVOF are harder than the base metal they sit on top of. Grinding that surface to a fine finish without burning it, losing coating integrity, or missing tolerance is different from grinding bare steel. HFW sees this combination often enough that hard coating over a softer substrate is routine work for the grinding department.

FAQ
CNC Precision Grinding Questions
What CNC grinding tolerances can HFW hold?+
Tolerance depends on geometry, material, coating type, workholding, and inspection requirements. HFW can hold tolerances as tight as 0.0002 inches on qualified critical features.
Can HFW grind thermal spray coatings?+
Yes. HFW grinds HVOF tungsten carbide, chrome carbide, ceramic, plasma spray, and other coated surfaces to final diameter and finish.
