April 12, 2023Positivity Wins
In a world where negativity is common, let positivity win.
In a world where negativity is common, let positivity win.
By Jack Watson
At this point in my life, I have only had a couple “real jobs.”
During high school I mowed (a lot) of grass and interned at HFW Industries, Inc.
In college, I spent a summer working for a civil site contractor. I learned more about life in eight weeks than I ever could have imagined.
Since graduating last May, I have now been at HFW for just about a year. Time flies when everyone is trying to problem solve!
And even though my work experience is certainly far from extensive, one thing that I have quickly noticed is that positivity wins.
Nobody likes to work with a grouch.
And even though gallows humor is often a source of camaraderie and can be funny, few people actually like to be miserable (and I try to stay away from the few who do).
Success in business and in life is built on positivity.
If my grandfather had listened to the bankers and advisors (who often call negativity “pragmatism” or being a “realist”) when he took over the business, HFW would not still be here. And this is a story every entrepreneur and business owner could tell you.
Just because something is commonly accepted does not mean that that is the way it has to be.
Manufacturing does not have to be demeaning, low-paying work (at HFW, it is the opposite).
Buffalo, NY does not have to be defined by its post-industrial downturn and snowy winters.
Positivity—a belief that the future is bright—is what helps turn paradigms on their heads.
Unless we have positivity and are optimistic about what we can do to make things around us better, nothing will change.
Positivity inspires action toward a better future.
Positivity and optimism are also infectious.
Smiling in the workplace, especially in the trades, is underrated. It is the little things that build a successful business (see my post from last week!).
So count on me to smile at work and be optimistic because, maybe it’s naivete, but I truly couldn’t be more excited for where HFW is going as a business.
PS: Send me a message if you want to be part of that journey!
