For example, a chemical company noticed irregularities in its manufacturing process. During the customer’s investigation, it was found that a supplier was improperly stripping the coating from its rolls in such a manner that the rolls had inconsistent wall thickness. The rolls, used in a chemical fiber application, faced consistent wear (from abrasion) and corrosion (from the process). Their lifespan was six months, which reliability engineers were hoping to improve by 50%.

The chemical company contacted HFW’s sales engineers, who reviewed the issue and recommended changing the machining methods used for reconditioning and the application process of the coating. HFW then developed a proprietary HVOF-applied coating that replaced the company’s existing plasma-sprayed chrome oxide coating. This proprietary coating increased the life of the company’s rolls from six months to more than five years (900% improvement!). The application has now been used on hundreds of rolls over the course of 30 years. This solution has consistently produced high-quality results, saving the customer millions of dollars and allowing production lines to reliability run for longer.
